Elementary K-7
Information about our K-7 Programming at SCIDES
SCIDES ensures your child’s learning is transparent, supported, and aligned with provincial standards—while providing the flexibility families need in an online learning environment.
At SCIDES, students in Kindergarten to Grade 7 learn through an asynchronous online program, meaning they can work at their own pace and schedule while receiving ongoing support from certified BC teachers. Learning follows the BC Curriculum and the provincial K–12 Student Reporting Policy.
What Learning Looks Like
- All SCIDES courses are offered online in your Brightspace learning account
- Students complete lessons, activities, and projects online.
- Teachers provide guidance, instructional support, and regular feedback.
- Learning is flexible so families can build schedules that work for them.
- Instruction is based on BC’s learning standards in all required subject areas.
- Families must identify a home facilitator who will support the students learning and manage engagement
- A Home Facilitator is mandatory in grades K-7 and although students start to work more independently in grades 8-9 it is important that they still have support in the home for their learning.
- K- 7 programming at SCIDES includes the following courses:
How Assessment Works
Teachers gather evidence of learning in many ways, such as:
· Submitted assignments – learning guides, projects, logs, etc
· Online quizzes, videos, audio clips, or presentations
· Conversations via phone, email, or virtual meetings
· Digital portfolios of work submitted in Brightspace
Assessment is ongoing, individualized, and strength-based, aimed at supporting growth over time.
The Provincial Proficiency Scale (K–7 Reporting)
SCIDES uses proficiency-based assessment and reporting to describe student learning. This scale focuses on understanding what your child can do now and what comes next.
· Emerging – beginning to understand the concepts
· Developing – growing and becoming more consistent
· Proficient – meeting grade-level expectations
· Extending – applying learning in deeper, more complex ways
How SCIDES Reports Progress
· Written Learning Updates – Report Cards (November, March and June)
o Includes proficiency indicators, descriptive feedback, activity and participation (attendance), and student self-reflection
o These are mailed home and available in the MyEd Parent Portal
· Informal Updates
o May include emails, phone calls, virtual meetings, written feedback in Brightspace
Core Competencies: Self-Reflection & Goal Setting
